Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I create my own card set?
A. Data on most topics can found by simply entering a tag into the search box and hitting the enter key, but if you need to create your own card set you can do so by signing up for a free account at flashcardexchange.com. After creating your card set you should tag it with something that makes sense to you. It will then show up in card set searches made from your phone.
Q. Does AlphaCards support images or sound?
A. No, the current version of AlphaCards does not support images or sound, but support for images is coming soon, and audio (probably) shortly thereafter.
Q. Is there any limit to the number of card sets I can download?
A. No, you are only limited to the amount of space available on your WebOS device.
Q. How big can card sets be?
A. Card sets can be of any size. In AlphaCards Free downloads are limited to the first 20 cards of any given set. This should allow you to check out the breadth of sets available and get a good sense of whether or not you like the application.
Q. What do the numbers on my search results represent?
A. The first number is the number of cards in the set. The second number is the number of times a user at flashcardexchange.com has "favorited" that card set. You can use the "favorite count" to get an idea of other peoples' opinion of the quality of the card set.
Q. I downloaded a card set but I can't find it. Where is it?
A. When you first install AlphaCards there is only one category, "Included Card Sets". This category includes divish verbs, italian verbs and world capitals. You can access the card sets in the category by tapping the blue arrow to the right of the category name. Card sets that you download are categorized under "My Card Sets" and can be accessed in a similar fashion.
Q. I don't understand how practicing cards works. Can you explain it?
A. Once you've selected a card set to practice with (either by tapping the set name or by tapping the settings icon and choosing 'practice') a first random card will be shown. Think of your answer and, once you've thought of it, tap the blue card that says "Tap Here To See The Correct Answer". When you do the correct answer will be shown. If your answer matches the correct one, tap the "Right!" button. If it doesn't tap the "Wrong!" button. The next card will be displayed automatically.
Q. What about cards I'd like to review in sequence?
A. You can review cards in sequence, though by default this is turned off. To turn on sequential card presentation tap the settings button (image of gears) for that set and choose "Manage Set". From the management screen check the box labeled "View In Sequence".
Q. What does "Retire Mastered Cards" under application preferences mean?
A. Cards that you get correct three times in a row are considered to be "mastered" and are generally not shown during practice sessions. They are reintroduced occasionally to ensure that you don't lose what you've learned. How frequently they are reintroduced is governed by what is called the reintroduction frequency. The default reintroduction frequency is to show a mastered card 1/5th of the time it otherwise would have been shown. When setting the reintroduction frequency you just set the denominator of the fraction (the '5' in 1/5th). If you want mastered cards to come up 1/4th as often as they otherwise would change this value to "4", to come up 1/3rd of the time a "3", etc. If you choose the value "1" even mastered cards will show up as often as they otherwise would.
Q. What is the "Card Division Value"?
A. Sometimes practicing with a card set that is very large can be daunting and it is useful to break that card set down into smaller, more manageable chunks. The card division value is the number of cards that will be placed in each subset of a given card set when you "divide" it. You can divide a card set into chunks by clicking the Settings button for that card set and choosing "Divide Set". A new category will be created based on the card set's title and each subset will be a part of the category. The original card set will not be removed.
Q. I divided a card set into 30 chunks. That's too many and I want to delete them!
A. Click the settings button on any one of the chunks. From the menu that pops up select "Delete Category". The entire category will be deleted. If you accidentally delete a category you can download the contents again using the search function.
